Building an Ethical and Sustainable Private Practice

A workshop for therapists who want to step confidently into private work.

Entering into private practice can feel exciting, daunting, and full of unknowns. Your psychotherapy training has given you the skills to be a therapist, but did it give you the practical skills to run a business?  Across this practical and reflective session, you’ll learn how to set up a private practice that supports both your clients and you.

Consider this your "need-to knows" for Private Practice!

Anchor 1

Working in Private Practice offers therapists freedom and flexibility to work in ways that align with who they are. You choose your working hours, you choose the clients that you work with and you choose when you want to take a break.

This workshop is for you if:

  • You are coming to the end of your training as a psychotherapist and are considering stepping into private practice. You want your private practice to be successful and want to start with good foundations.

  • You are a qualified therapist who has worked in employed roles but are looking for the freedom and flexibility that a private practice can offer but don't really know where to begin.

  • You've started your private practice but feel like it's all a guessing game and would benefit from some guidance.

  • You're thinking of becoming a therapist and want to know if private practice could work for you.

I asked fellow self-employed therapists how they felt when they first started their Private Practice. Here's what they said:

"unprepared"
"excited but doubtful"
"wringing it"
"lost"
"overwhelmed"
"I just had to go with the flow"

Your course gave you skills to be an amazing therapist. This workshop will give you the knowledge to allow you to reach clients and enjoy your work without the overwhelm and uncertainty.

Workshop Content

Sustainable practice foundations:

  • How to set your fees to align with your needs and values.

  • Understanding the costs of running a private practice - I'll openly share my costs with you as a real-life example.

  • Balancing accessibility with your own wellbeing.

  • Working through money guilt.

Ethical, congruent marketing:

  • How to build a directory profile that stands out.

  • Identifying your niche without boxing yourself in.

  • Navigating social media and websites with integrity.

Ways of working:

  • Exploring the different ways you can offer support. Spoiler: 1:1 sessions are just ONE way to work.

  • The administrative systems that save time and energy.

The emotional reality:

  • Navigating life as a business owner, therapist and human

  • How to build support as you transition into private work.

Throughout the workshop the emphasis will always be to think about what you want to do and how you can shape your private practice around that.

Before I started my Private Practice, the only reference point I had was to see what other therapists were doing. But the thing with that is you don't know what their circumstances are. What works for one person, may not work for another. Private Practice won't work with a "copy and paste" method. You need to find what aligns with you.

This workshop will show you that there's so many different ways to "be" in private practice.

Hi! I’m Laura Wood. I qualified as a Psychotherapist in 2022 from the University of Nottingham and I’ve been successfully working solely in Private Practice ever since!

Through my own experience and interactions with other therapists, I have created a workshop that I wish I had before entering this journey - it would have saved me a lot of time, stress and money. I’ve navigated moving locations, maternity leave and now working while being a mum. These experiences have given me a wealth of knowledge that I’m excited to share. I'd love for you to be able to begin your private practice with confidence, assurance and certainty.

Laura Wood specialises in helping individuals move from loneliness in relationships to emotional clarity, closeness, and connection.
