What Is Video Therapy? A Real-Time Connection from the Comfort of Your Home

Video therapy offers the opportunity to connect with me face-to-face (but through a screen) from the comfort of your own space. For those who struggle with social anxiety, the idea of being “seen” in a therapy session can feel daunting. Video therapy allows you to be seen in a way that may feel a little less intense than in-person therapy, as you're in a space that is familiar and private to you.

Video therapy offers a unique way to work through challenges that feels both personal and flexible. For many socially anxious adults, the thought of interacting in real-time can be overwhelming. Video therapy provides a middle ground—it allows us to connect in a live, face-to-face session, but from the comfort of your own space. There's no need to leave home, deal with travel, or face unfamiliar settings. Instead, you get to interact with me from a space that feels familiar.

In our video sessions, you’ll get the chance to express yourself in real time. I’ll be able to hear the tone of your voice and see your facial expressions, which helps me respond in a human, empathetic way. But more importantly, you’ll get to see and hear me too—helping you feel connected and less isolated in the process.

How Video Therapy Works

Video therapy with me is done through Google Meet. We’ll schedule sessions at times that work for you, and we’ll meet virtually for our sessions.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • A reliable internet connection

  • A private, quiet space where you won’t be interrupted

  • A webcam and microphone (most laptops or smartphones have these built-in)

  • The video platform link I’ll provide, which is simple to use

Once we have our session scheduled, you’ll receive a link to access our video call. When it’s time, all you need to do is click the link, and we’ll meet face-to-face virtually, from wherever you are.

The Benefits of Video Therapy

Video therapy brings several unique benefits, especially for those who may struggle with face-to-face interactions or the stress of being in unfamiliar settings. These benefits include:

  • Privacy and Comfort: You’re in your own space, where you feel safe and at ease. This can help reduce anxiety and make the process feel more accessible.

  • Real-Time Connection: Unlike email therapy, video therapy offers real-time communication, allowing us to respond to each other’s emotions as they arise. It feels more like an in-person interaction, with the added benefit of being in your familiar environment.

  • Non-Verbal Cues: Being able to see each other’s facial expressions, body language, and hear tone of voice brings a deeper connection and understanding. It can help me pick up on subtleties that you may not even notice about yourself.

  • Flexibility: Video therapy removes the need to travel, meaning you can have therapy sessions from anywhere. It’s a great option for people with busy schedules or those who live far away from a therapist.

Is Video Therapy Right for You?

Video therapy may be a good fit for you if:

  • You feel comfortable being seen and heard on camera

  • You prefer the real-time connection of live sessions

  • You find it easier to speak and connect when you’re in a space you control (i.e., your home or private space)

  • You’re unable to travel to meet a therapist in person (due to time, location, or mobility constraints)

If you’re looking for consistent, structured, real-time support that fits into your lifestyle, video therapy can be a really powerful tool.

A Final Word from Me

Video therapy offers the balance of real-time connection with the comfort of being in a space that’s familiar and private to you. Whether you’re managing social anxiety or simply looking for a therapy format that feels less intimidating than in-person sessions, video therapy can be a meaningful and accessible way to begin (and continue) your therapy journey.
